In Taxiphone, Mohammed Soudani investigates how outsiders perceive his home country Algeria. A Swiss couple on their way to Mali get stuck in a small oasis in the Algerian desert. Oliver, who is taking a truck to a buyer in Timbuktu, finds himself stuck in a third world country where nothing is working as it should. His girlfriend Elena, however, is charmed by the mysterious and endlessly fascinating environment: she feels like she’s landed in a story of a thousand and one nights. While Oliver attempts to get the truck going again, Elena makes friends with the locals. The two lovers drift apart.
